The world of college coaching is not the same as what it used to be. Successful coaches are those that not only can win consistently, but recruit at a high level. These are two traits that Yanni Hufnagel has proven that he has. Over his career he has displayed an incredible ability to recruit top notch players. Hufnagel’s origins date back to New York where he was born and raised. He quickly realized he was not going to be a great basketball player and worked his way into other areas. His first coaching gig came as graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma. It is during this time he worked with and helped to develop current NBA star Blake Griffin.
Hufnagel soon moved to Harvard University where he worked as an assistant coach. Under the guidance of head coach and Duke star Tommy Amaker. It was during this time that Hufnagel earned a reputation as being a dynamic recruiter. He would continue this excellence at other stops including Vanderbilt and California University. Under coaches like Kevin Stallings and Cuonzo Martin, Hufnagel gained high praise for his abilities. His work has been recognized by many respected names in the business including Seth Greenberg of ESPN and Jeff Capel, Duke assistant coach.
Yanni Hufnagel currently works as the assistant coach at Nevada University. His reputation as a good recruiter continues to be evident in every stop he makes. With such a solid resume, Hufnagel will most likely find a head coaching job in the near future. He should be listed near the top of all head coaching candidates going forward.
